About Spyce

Spyce Kitchen was a Somerville, Massachusetts-based robotic kitchen startup that developed technology using seven autonomous work stations to prepare bowl-based healthy meals in three minutes or less. Founded in 2016 by four MIT mechanical engineering graduates—Michael Farid, Brady Knight, Luke Schlueter, and Kale Rogers—who wanted to make healthy meals more affordable. The team built robotic technology and initially served food to students at an MIT dining hall, receiving the ,000 "Eat It" Lemelson-MIT undergraduate prize in 2016 as one of America's top collegiate inventors in food technology. They partnered with renowned chefs Daniel Boulud and Thomas Keller to create their restaurant menu, with prices starting at .50 for complete meals. Their first restaurant opened May 3, 2018, in Boston. Spyce raised .8 million over 4 rounds from 19 investors including Khosla Ventures and Maveron, with a million Series A in 2018. In August 2021, Sweetgreen acquired Spyce for approximately million to develop their Infinite Kitchen automated restaurant concept, closing both Spyce locations to focus on technology development. In November 2025, Wonder acquired the Spyce robotics unit from Sweetgreen for 86.4 million. As part of the deal, Sweetgreen signed a supply and license agreement to continue deploying Infinite Kitchens, and 38 Spyce engineers including all four co-founders transitioned to Wonder. The acquisition demonstrates the continued value of robotic kitchen technology in the rapidly evolving food service industry.
